Published on 2003 by Stanford University Press

Why do people buy health insurance? Conventional theory holds that people purchase insurance because they prefer the certainty of paying a small premium to the risk of getting sick and paying a large medical bill. This book presents a new theory of consumer demand for health insurance. It holds that people purchase insurance to obtain additional |income| when they become ill.

      Delay, Deny, Defend
      By:Jay M. Feinman

      Published on 2010-03-18 by Penguin

An expose of insurance injustice and a plan for consumers and lawmakers to fight it Over the last two decades, insurance has become less of a safety net and more of a spider's web: sticky and complicated, designed to ensnare as much as to aid. Insurance companies now often try to delay payment of justified claims, deny payment altogether, and defend these actions by forcing claimants to enter litigation. Jay M. Feinman, a legal scholar and insurance expert, explains how these trends developed, how the government ought to fix the system, and what the rest of us can do to protect ourselves. He shows that the denial of valid claims is not occasional or accidental or the fault of a few bad employees. It's the result of an increasing and systematic focus on maximizing profits by major companies such as Allstate and State Farm. Citing dozens of stories of victims who were unfairly denied payment, Feinman explains how people can be more cautious when shopping for policies and what to do when pursuing a disputed claim. He also lays out a plan for the legal reforms needed to prevent future abuses. This exposé will help drive the discussion of this increasingly hot- button issue.

              By:Cal Newport

Published on 2012-09-18 by Hachette UK

In an unorthodox approach, Georgetown University professor Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that |follow your passion| is good advice, and sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving their careers. Not only are pre-existing passions rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work, but a focus on passion over skill can be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. Spending time with organic farmers, venture capitalists, screenwriters, freelance computer programmers, and others who admitted to deriving great satisfaction from their work, Newport uncovers the strategies they used and the pitfalls they avoided in developing their compelling careers. Cal reveals that matching your job to a pre-existing passion does not matter. Passion comes after you put in the hard work to become excellent at something valuable, not before. In other words, what you do for a living is much less important than how you do it. With a title taken from the comedian Steve Martin, who once said his advice for aspiring entertainers was to |be so good they can't ignore you,| Cal Newport's clearly written manifesto is mandatory reading for anyone fretting about what to do with their life, or frustrated by their current job situation and eager to find a fresh new way to take control of their livelihood. He provides an evidence-based blueprint for creating work you love, and will change the way you think about careers, happiness, and the crafting of a remarkable life.

                      Published on 2016-09-01 by

Reverse mortgages have been surrounded by negativity. They were often mentioned alongside phrases like |last resort,| |out of money,| and |bad choice.| In 2014, intrigued by the seemingly universal bad rap reverse mortgages had cultivated, Dr. Wade Pfau began researching them in depth. Over the course of the next year, he came to the conclusion that reverse mortgages aren't inherently a bad idea, though they are often misunderstood and not used in a most beneficial way. In fact, Dr. Pfau realized that reverse mortgages---when used correctly---can provide an added layer of security for retirees and allow them to enjoy retirement more by gaining liquidity from an illiquid asset.

Maximizing reader insights into the current use of conventional energy sources (such as fossil fuels) in the generation of electricity in the European region, this book addresses several key issues including: potential ways European countries could expand their energy sector in the coming years; the impact on the climate, the level of energy reserves, different efficiency measures that could be adopted to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in the generation of electricity, and current and future energy production and consumption trends, amongst other topics. Covering both how the use of fossil fuels for the generation of electricity can be reduced, and how to increase the current level of participation of those energy sources with a minimum negative impact on the environment in the energy balance of the different European countries, this book describes the main economic aspects related to the use of conventional energy sources for electricity generation and provides information on possible regional energy integration mechanisms and their potential impact on the generation of electricity. ‘Electrical Energy Generation in Europe’ is designed as a useful tool for government officials, energy experts, and the private and public power industry, among others, during the preparation of future energy plans and in the identification of the possible role that the different types of conventional energy sources available in the region could play in the production of electricity during the coming decades. The book is also suitable for use as teaching material in pre-graduated and post-graduate studies on the use of different types of conventional energy sources for electricity production within different European countries.

The book provides a sound mathematical base for life insurance mathematics and applies the underlying concepts to concrete examples. Moreover the models presented make it possible to model life insurance policies by means of Markov chains. Two chapters covering ALM and abstract valuation concepts on the background of Solvency II complete this volume. Numerous examples and a parallel treatment of discrete and continuous approaches help the reader to implement the theory directly in practice.

Is life insurance a bad investment? Don't I lose all my cash value when I die? Shouldn't I just make a bundle and invest it instead? What about my spouse or my kids-do they need life insurance? Can I borrow money from (or is it against?) a life insurance policy? My insurance advisor told me one thing about insurance, but my financial planner gave me different advice, and an expert on TV said something else entirely. What do I do now? Help! Every day, people like you and me run into questions like these-and no good answers. The truth about life insurance is that myths, misunderstandings, and even outright lies cause a lot of uncertainty around what it is, how it works, who needs it and when, and-most importantly-the great benefits it can bring to your life. This book is here to clear up all that confusion. With combined experience of over fifty years in the life insurance industry, Kim Butler and Jack Burns know what's true and what isn't. They've seen what works and what fails. They've lived through every success and failure the industry can throw at them. And they're fed up with seeing smart, well-meaning people fall for costly half-truths and mix-ups because they just can't find the right information. Busting The Life Insurance Lies takes the 38 biggest, loudest myths around life insurance and breaks them wide open. Whether you're wondering if life insurance is right for you, wanting to understand how it can help you while you're still alive, or even an insurance advisor yourself, this book will guide you to the answers you need to make the clearest, most informed decision-one you'll feel good about for the rest of your life.

'The Appeal of Insurance is an excellent collection that reflects a growing interest in insurance research within the social sciences. Clearly written and accessible to a variety of audiences, this is a volume of world-class scholarship.'-Luis Lobo-Guerrero, School of Politics, International Relations, and Philosophy, Keele University In the marketing of its products, the insurance industry has always depended on a considerable dose of moral exhortation and enlightened appeal. The Appeal of Insurance traces the ways in which insurance over the past three centuries, perhaps more than any other business, has grown in concert with a clientele largely of its own making. Faced with a public that has preferred to avoid confronting the certainty of fatality or the probabilities of catastrophe, insurance promoters have had to create a demand for their products, first, by persuading the public to see the world as ruled less by divine judgments and more by statistical patterns, and second, by proclaiming a moral imperative of hedging against death and disaster by the prudential recourse to insurance. The essays presented here examine the history of insurance as a process of negotiation between the embedded social, legal, and cultural norms out of which the practice of insurance grew, and the new arrangements and sensibilities that insurance itself helped bring into being. Today, insurance is a global economic colossus and a fixture in the developed countries of the world. But neither the financial clout of the insurance industry nor its ubiquity conveys the full measure of its social and political influence. The insurance industry has in fact become a primary agent of discipline and control over public and private behaviours by imposing upon them the criterion of insurability. By tracing the boundaries of acceptable (and compensated) from unacceptable (and uncompensated) risk, insurers directly or indirectly govern people, products, and markets, and by this process become one of the most powerful and pervasive agents of social and economic control. Including up-to-the-minute information on new licensing and disclosure rules and the latest eligibility requirements, the book shows readers how to: Complete the loan application to maximize their chances of approval • Steer clear of credit repair scams • Pay zero closing costs • Qualify for the lowest rates • Avoid origination charges • Determine whether paying “points” can save them money • Identify a “rip-off” loan program • Refinance—even if their equity has dropped • And more! Whether looking into securing a mortgage for the first time or seeking to refinance, Mortgage Confidential gives readers the confidence and information necessary to get through this complicated process and find the ideal loan for their needs.
